According to the Spanish media, Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte is ‘personally pushing’ for the club to meet the £36m release clause of Barcelona ace Sergi Roberto.
The 25-year-old versatile midfielder is down the pecking order at the Camp Nou following the arrival of Nelson Semedo from Benfica and is considered a squad rotation player by Ernesto Valverde.
Sergi Roberto has a £36m release clause in his contract and Barcelona are keen to renegotiate his current deal so that they can increase the clause.
It is believed that Manchester United and Juventus are preparing a move for the right-back but Antonio Conte wants Chelsea to swoop in before their rivals.
Roberto has been primarily used as a full-back in his Barcelona career but is comfortable in central midfield, a quality that could prove valuable in Chelsea’s small squad.
But the reports claim that the Spaniard is happy to stay at Catalan club but stands to double his wages with a move to the Premier League.
The same sources claim Roberto’s agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, will hold a meeting with Barcelona officials this week to decide on the defender’s future.
