Chelsea have once against been linked with Napoli star Dries Mertens as the summer window moves further into the distance and the January transfer period draws ever closer.
The Blues were linked with the forward in the papers this week, along with title rival Manchester United. There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of evidence for either making a concrete bid, although one would imagine the Blues have the edge in this particular tussle as United are already so well stocked up front.
While United have Rashford, Martial and Lukaku battling for a single spot, Chelsea are understaffed up top having seen the main target Fernando Llorente join rivals Tottenham on deadline day.
Martens only signed a new contract with Napoli in May with the €28m release clause, but he has been linked with a move away from the Italian club after he hit 28 Seria A goals last season. Whether Chelsea will be willing to break their long-standing policy and open their chequebook for a player over 30 is another matter.
Dries Mertens joined Napoli in summer of 2013 from PSV for €9.5m. He played in 194 games so far and scored 77 goals for the club.
