It has been reported recently that Chelsea are ready to make a £20m bid for Bayer Leverkusen attacker Leon Bailey in the January transfer window.
The highly-demanded Jamaica international is rated as one of the most promising young talents in the Bundesliga, and has managed to score four goals – and provided two assists – in his 11 league outings this season.
And, as per The Sun, Bailey is Chelsea’s No.1 transfer target when the window reopens next month, though they will offer to loan him back to Bayer Leverkusen for the remainder of the season.
Interestingly, the report suggests that Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has had no involvement in the deal, which could hint at fresh tension between the Italian manager and the club’s hierarchy.
The 20-year-old Bailey has been identified by the club’s recruitment department, who have pulled off similar deals before; Kurt Zouma, for example, was loaned back to Saint-Etienne.
Nevertheless, Antonio Conte is known to want more firepower and pace in his attack, and Leon Bailey – who is one of the quickest players in Bundesliga right now – provides both. Chelsea have tracked Bailey for 18 months, even watching him several times while he was still at Belgian side Genk.
