The former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has confirmed that the Merseyside giants are ‘on the cusp’ of sealing the transfer of RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, who has been Jurgen Klopp’s No.1 target for the summer transfer window.
The Reds have been heavily linked with the 22-year-old Keita, but have been reported as failing with two big-money bids for the Guinea international so far.
However, a third and final bid of around £70m is expected according to various sources, which would smash the club’s transfer record, which was set earlier in this transfer window with the £37m signing of Mohamed Salah.
During his interview with the Daily Mirror, Owen spoke about the potential transfer of Naby Keita. He said: ‘They are on the cusp of signing Keita, and that could be an amazing signing if that came off.
‘I think Salah is a really good signing, he didn’t quite nail it at Chelsea, but he was young at the time. He’s gone away, he had a good time at Roma, he’s got outstanding pace and if you’re an attacking player with loads of pace then you’re valuable.
‘I think Liverpool are now looking like a team with a real potent attack. They needed to bolster the squad for Champions League football, a higher standard of games, so I think it’s important that they did that.’
