IVAN TONEY has confirmed he will return to Newcastle from his loan spell at Shrewsbury.
Toney, 20, joined Shrewsbury on loan in the summer but has opted to return to Newcastle for the remainder of the season.
He made 25 appearances during his six-month spell for the League One strugglers, scoring seven goals in the process.
Paul Hurst opted to leave Toney out of his side for his last fixture against Fleetwood on Sunday, in which they lost 1-0.
A club statement read: “Shrewsbury Town can confirm that Ivan Toney has left the club at the culmination of his loan spell.
“Ivan’s six-month loan deal was up after Monday’s game with Fleetwood Town and he has chosen to return to Newcastle United.”
And Toney, who joined Newcastle in the summer of 2015 from Northampton, has wished Shrewsbury all the best in their relegation scrap.
He said: “I would like to thank everyone at the club, staff, fans and players for making my time very enjoyable. It was a great experience and still a learning curve.
“I would like to wish the club all the best in the future and hopefully they get where they should be, which is the top half of the table.”
