According to Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio, the Serie A giants couldn’t afford to lose Ivan Perisic to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
Man United boss Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign the Croatia international this summer but Inter wanted upwards of £50m to let him leave.
The 28-year-old Perisic, for his part, was keen on a move to Old Trafford but Inter’s excellent start to the campaign has helped ease the pain of his failed move to the Red Devils. Many expected San Siro side to eventually accept defeat in their bid to keep Perisic, especially given the figures involved.
However, the Italian giants decided to keep Perisic and club director Ausilio says they made the right decision.
‘We know how important he [Perisic] is’ Ausilio said. ‘He is happy to stay at Inter, he is a great pro, he takes care of every small detail and I think one can see it. He is a top player to me.’
United have started with one of Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial on the left wing this season and have showed few signs that they regret landing Perisic. However, Mourinho is said to have brought up the club’s failure to sign Perisic after United’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield in October.
