According to the English media sources, Manchester United are on red alert as their arch rivals Manchester City have held talks with Southampton over a shock £50m deal for Virgil van Dijk, who is reported target of Jose Mourinho.
The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with moves to Man United and Chelsea but problems in defensive areas has persuaded Man City boss Pep Guardiola and the Spanish manager is considering reinforcements for the second half of the season.
The 25-year-old Van Dijk has emerged as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League this season and his mix of strength and style would be ideally suited to the brand of football Guardiola is hoping to bring to the Etihad Stadium.
The Dutch defender left Celtic for Southampton back in 2015 for just £13m but the Saints are in line to make a huge profit with the Daily Mail suggesting they’re seeking around £50m for Van Dijk’s signature.
Though the Citizens are likely to bid lower than that price, strong competition from Chelsea and Man United could spark a bidding frenzy and Southampton hold all the cards in negotiations with Van Dijk on a long-term deal.
