Barcelona have issued a statement denying they have agreed to a deal to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.
Griezmann is a long term transfer target for Manchester United, and was expected to move to Old Trafford last summer – only for Atletico’s transfer ban and an injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic to scupper the plans.
Barcelona are also admirers of Griezmann, and Spanish paper Sport reported a deal had been agreed for a move in the upcoming summer transfer window.
However the Catalan giants adamantly denied the deal in an official statement released by the club.
“FC Barcelona strongly denies the information that has appeared over the course of the last few hours in different media regarding Atlético Madrid player, Antoine Griezmann, and an alleged deal with our club,” the statement read.
“FC Barcelona expresses its objections in the face of these events and reiterates its full respect for the institution of Atlético Madrid.”
The newspaper report had stated there ‘would be a financial punishment’ if either Griezmann or Barcelona pulled out of the proposed deal.
Rumours of a move to Barcelona for the Frenchman increased after the La Liga club assigned new signing Philippe Coutinho the number 14 shirt – opting to potentially leave the number 7 open for Griezmann.
And despite the denial, the Spanish club remain firm favourites to land his signature, after Manchester United turned their attention to Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez instead.
