Premier League runners-up Tottenham Hotspur are to make a £15m move for Swansea City’s England U21 international Alfie Mawson.
The young 6 ft 2 in centre-back was playing Non-League football not long ago and now he’s been linked with a move to a side who’ll be playing in the Champions League.
The Sun say that the London club are looking to add to their defensive ranks, especially with centre-back Toby Alderweireld being linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.
The article also goes on to say that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has already been in contact with Swansea over a possible move.
Mawson himself revealed that Clement holds him in high regard in an interview with The Guardian, with his manager seeing him as a potential captain here, as well as seeing him play for a bigger club.‘
“You want to do well, you want to learn, and what’s to stop you from doing certain things in your career? What’s to stop you from becoming the captain of this club? What’s to stop you from pushing on to a bigger club?
What’s to stop you from being a full England international? The only thing that will stop you is yourself.’”
Spurs’ recruitment policy is usually based on signing players who are young and can stay at the club long-term and with Mawson’s quality performances for Swansea this season, it is the kind of player Spurs recruit regularly.
The 23 year-old is currently away on international duty as he represents the England U21 squad out in Poland and he was chosen ahead of FA Cup winning centre-back Rob Holding in the Three Lions first game with Sweden.
The Hillingdon born centre-back only joined the Swans last summer, signing for a fee of £5.5m on a four-year deal and the Swans hierachy would be reluctant to sell given his performances last season, as he was part of the Swans side that helped the club to safety in the Premier League.
Swans fans have been impressed with Mawson this season and even jokingly chanted about Mawson being better than former club captain Ashley Williams when the two clubs met back in May.
“You’re just a **** Alfie Mawson! **** Alfie Mawson! You’re just a **** Alfie Mawson!” chanted the Swansea fans as reported by Wales Online.
After playing for five clubs before moving to the Liberty, Mawson now seems settled with the Swans and both Paul Clement and the fans will be hopeful that he will be wearing the colours of Swansea on the opening game of the season against Southampton.
