AC Milan are prepared to compete with Barcelona to land Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer this summer, Italian news outlet MilanLive reports.
Wijnaldum moved to the Reds from Newcastle in a £25 million deal back in 2016 and has been a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s side over the seasons.
His deal expires at the end of the campaign, and with no concrete contract extension discussions taking place, his Anfield future hangs in the balance.
The Netherlands international has been strongly linked with a move to Spanish outfit Barcelona in recent months, with manager and compatriot Ronald Koeman keen on the player’s services.
Reports from Italy state that AC Milan are also looking at the 30-year-old, with technical director Paolo Maldini pushing for a summer move.
However, it is claimed that his high salary demands could prove to be a stumbling block in a possible Milan move should the Rossoneri legend make an attempt for the Liverpool midfielder.
With no contract extension in sight, Georginio looks likely to move on to a new team at the end of the season.
However, many at the club hope they can persuade the in-demand midfielder to stay put on Merseyside with an improved contract.
The Dutchman has proven to be an important player for the Reds this season.
He has never made less than 40 appearances for his side in any campaign since his move in 2016.
Wijnaldum currently has the joint-most appearances this campaign with 35 outings.
