Arsenal have begun talks with centre-back Rob Holding about a fresh long-term contract at the club, according to a recent report.
Football Insider states that the management want to reward a player who has proved his worth amid Arsenal’s current crisis.
Mikel Arteta‘s men sit 15th in the Premier League standings after their worst start to a campaign since 1974.
While the defence has continued to leak goals, Football Insider notes that Rob is among those who has fully earned the trust of his head coach.
The source says that Mikel rates the English star highly and, as such, wants to tie him down to a new contract.
TEAMtalk revealed in September how Mikel performed a U-turn on Holding, having previously wanted to let the player leave.
Holding has three years left on his existing terms but Arsenal want to resolve his situation before he enters the final two campaigns of the agreement.
He made his seventh start in eight league games. Indeed, only recent arrival Gabriel Magalhaes has started more league matches than him this term.
Rob made 23 outings last term, a collection which only featured six starts. As such, Holding has already beaten that record and looks likely to continue his influence.
Football Insider adds that the struggling London outfit plan a new ‘long-term’ deal for the defender.
Meantime, Arsenal have allegedly identified Borussia Dortmund’s midfielder, Julian Brandt, as a possible January transfer target.
The club have struggled for goals this campaign, finding the back of the net just 15 times in 15 matches – three of which came against city rivals Chelsea on Saturday.
