Arsenal have agreed on a deal in principle to secure the services of Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko, according to reports in Ukraine.

The North London club are keen to secure the services of a new defender before the end of the winter transfer window and are in advanced talks with Brazilian club Flamengo over a move for centre-back Pablo Mari who has been identified as a replacement for Callum Chambers.

However, according to Ukrainian outlet TEAM1, the Gunners have reached an agreement with  Matviyenko before the winter transfer window ends.

The report suggests that the Gunners are now deciding whether to push ahead with a move for Matviyenko or to bring in Mari instead.

Last week, it was reported that Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta has played a key role in the Gunners move for Matviyenko and recommended the 23-year-old to Manchester City during his time with Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Spanish manager has already seen Matviyenko in action twice this campaign when Shakhtar played City in the Champions League.

However, the Gunners have appeared closer to securing the services of Mari after he arrived in London with the North London club’ technical director Edu on Saturday.

The Spanish centre-back finalised his medical over the weekend, however, has made a return to Brazil on Monday with the Gunners being unable to agree on a deal with Flamengo.

The Brazilian team are unhappy after the Gunners changed the terms of the agreement as they switched from a permanent transfer to a loan.

Mari is believed to be keen on joining the Gunners and that has played a vital factor in negotiations with Flamengo.
