Arsenal have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to secure services of Sporting Lisbon forward Pedro Goncalves.
The 22-year-old attacker has scored 15 goals in the Primeira Liga this campaign and has a further three assists.
Goncalves has been likened to Bruno Fernandes in terms of his style of play and was recently touted as a target for the Red Devils.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Gunners have also been keeping tabs on Goncalves’ progress with a view to making a move at the end of the next campaign.
Portugal Under-21s international Goncalves has a £52m release clause in his current deal, although Sporting may be tempted to cash in on the playmaker for a lower price.
Meanwhile, Arsenal player on course to leave the Emirates in the summer has been linked with a quartet of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, after coming to a realisation about his career.
Much of the north Londoners’ summer transfer plans could hinge on securing the financial riches the continent’s elite competition provides.
Mikel Arteta’s team have been strongly linked with a permanent deal for the Norway international Martin Odegaard.
Major signings beyond that, however, may first require exits. One star who could generate significant funds is the English star Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The 23-year-old Ainsley is currently plying his trade with West Brom on loan, though his current side appear unlikely to beat the drop.
