Arsenal are hopeful that forward Alexandre Lacazette could agree to a fresh short-term contract at the Emirates, according to a report.

However, the Frenchman has forced his way back into the starting XI on a regular basis in the latest weeks and has played an important role in the team’s upturn in fortunes up top.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners have not ruled out the possibility of Alexandre signing a new short-term contract at the club, but Arsenal are unwilling to hand the player the long-term contract that he desires.

The report adds that the board are mindful of up-and-coming stars such as Gabriel Martinelli and Folarin Balogun when it comes to renewal for Lacazette, and they don’t want their chances of landing a new attacker to be hampered by a lengthy extension for the ex-Lyon star.

Alexandre and good friend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are understood to act as positive role models for Arsenal’s youngsters, with the former impressing the club’s coaches with his attitude to training.

He has started his side’s last three Premier League matches and boasts 68 goals from 179 outings in a Gunners shirt.
