Arsenal have joined the fray for RB Leipzig’s attacking midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, according to the latest reports.
The Austrian looks ready for a step up after impressing for his side over the past few years and he has been linked with a Premier League transfer in recent months.
Thus far, Tottenham have appeared to be the favourites. Sabitzer scored against them in last campaign’s UEFA Champions League, so they know full well what Marcel can do.
He is now entering the final 18 months of his deal. Leipzig may have to cash in on their star in one of the upcoming transfer markets.
That could lead to fresh talk about a move to Tottenham. However, according to ESPN‘s Julien Laurens, the Gunners are also interested in the player.
The north Londoners wanted to bring in another midfielder last year, even after signing Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.
Lyon’s Houssem Aouar was a major target before committing to Les Gones for the season, while their attention then switched to Dominik Szoboszlai – who has since announced he’ll be joining Leipzig.
Hence, the Gunners now have to shift their focus elsewhere.
Marcel could be an option, although he would come with a £45 million price tag that may prove off-putting.
Leipzig chief Markus Krosche recently confirmed that contract discussions with Sabitzer are on hold for the time being.
The German also responded directly to the speculation that Marcel could join Tottenham.
“As I said, he has made a great development. It goes without saying that other clubs also notice this.” Markus commented.
