Arsenal are supposedly hoping to finalise a deal for Benfica defender Nuno Tavares.
The Gunners recently tied Kieran Tierney down to a new long-term contract, however, Sead Kolasinac’s is likely to be on his way out from the Emirates Stadium this summer and it would leave them short of options on the left-back position.
Cedric Soares and Granit Xhaka were often forced to play on the left-back position while Tierney was on the sidelines, meaning that Mikel Arteta is believed to strengthen his ranks in that position before the start of the 2021/22 season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners have already touched base with Tavares’s agents over a move, and the defender ‘dreams’ of testing himself in the English top-tier.
The ex-Sporting Lisbon youth product ended the 2020-21 campaign with three assists from 25 games in all competitions, and he came off the bench as a late substitute in Benfica’s 3-2 Europa League last-32 second leg loss against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Tavares’s existing Benfica contract does not expire until 2024, and Premier League giants will supposedly have to fork out £12.8m to secure his services.
