Arsenal legend Alan Smith has explained why Nicolas Pepe has been a headache for Mikel Arteta.

Pepe looked to been on of the best young players while performing at Lille, however, has been slow to settle at Arsenal since his £72m arrival at the Emirates Stadium and he often fails to play in Arteta’s starting XI.

The Ivory Coast international still has time to improve at Arsenal and establish himself as a regular for Arteta’s side, however,Smith admits the problem for Arteta is the pressure to play him following his huge price tag.

Speaking to 101greatgoals, ex-Arsenal forward Smith said: “Well Nicolas Pepe is a problem in a way because he cost so much money.

“To a certain extent you’re under a little bit of pressure to play him even if you don’t start him. He has disappointed.

“I was hoping in his second season that he would kick on. Clearly, Arsenal paid far too much money for him. Willian has been brought in who can play on the right-hand side although he is a much different player, but much more reliable.”

The 25-year-old forward still has time to rediscover his form and revive his career at the Emirates Stadium.
