Cesc Fabregas reveals Xabi Alonso wanted Arsenal move

Former Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he did everything possible to convince the Gunners to secure the services of former Liverpool midfield star Xabi Alonso.

During a five-year stint with the Merseyside Reds, Alonso has found back of the net 18 times from 210 games in all competitions, as well as helping them to win the historic Champions League back in 2005.

However, before Alonso eventually made the switch to Real Madrid back in 2009, Fabregas has revealed that his compatriot wanted ot join him at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to the Arsecast podcast, Fabregas said: “I was with Xabi on the phone the whole summer. He was dying to come. He was literally begging everyone to go to Arsenal, he really wanted to come, and to be honest, I did my best. I spoke to who I had to speak to. I gave my opinion, I thought that he was a fantastic addition for us at that time.

“And yeah I have to say that a couple of times like that I was frustrated by the lack of push, the final push – you know what I mean? That it’s so close, the player is dying to come, it’s so easy to make this deal.

“And yeah, Xabi Alonso was one of them. I mean I was living it day-to-day because he was texting me all the time. I remember the whole holiday I was talking to him, he was texting me: ‘What’s happening?’ And it was a shame, because I think he would have been a great, great, great addition to that team.”

Fabregas spent two more years at the Gunners before signing for his former team Barcelona back in 2011 and has managed to win the treble with the Catalan club during his time at the club.

Liverpool and Arsenal go head-to-head to sign 6 ft 1 defender

Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly among the sides keeping close tabs on South African talented centre-back Bradley Cross.

The 6 ft 1 defender has spent this campaign on loan at German giants Schalke 04 from Bidvest Wits, where he has played 18 games in the Under-19 Bundesliga West this campaign.

According to The Daily Mail, the Mersyesude Red and the Gunners are looking to strengthen their defensive options and will send scouts to keep close tabs on the defender when football returns due to a coronavirus outbreak it is still unclear when we will be able to watch football.

The report also suggests that Cross has benefited from playing alongside highly-rated centre-back Malick Thiaw, who is another youngster rumoured with a switch to Liverpool.

The 19-year-old defender is eligible to represent both England and South Africa national teams.

Meanwhile, Lazio are reportedly ready to go head-to-head with Arsenal to secure the services of Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren during this summer’s transfer window.

Dejan Lovren, who will be out of his current deal at the end of next campaign, is believed to be the subject of interest from both Premier Leauge clubs Tottenham and Arsenal.

Arsenal slapped €25m price tag on Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Arsenal have reportedly informed Roma that they will have to come up with €25m in order to secure the services of Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a permanent deal when the summer transfer window will be re-opened.

The 31-year-old joined Italian giants on loan from the North London club last summer and has played 20 games during the 2019-20 season, founding back of the net six times and providing four assists in the process.

AS Roma are allegedly keen on securing the services of the attacker on a permanent basis this summer as well as their another loan Chris Smalling who has joined them from Man Utd.

According to Corriere dello Sport, though, the Gunners are asking for €25m (£23.1m), which would prove problematic for the Italian giants, while the Armenian’s €7m (£6.5m) per year wage packet would also be an issue for the Stadio Olimpico’s side.

Mkhitaryan moved to the Norht London club back in January 2018 as part of the deal that has seen Alexis Sanchez making the switch to Man Utd.

The versatile forward has only scored nine goals in 58 games for Arsenal though and was deemed surplus to requirements by Unai Emery, however, there has been reports that Arteta is keen on to work with the Armenian forward and could block his possible transfer to AS Roma.
