Arsenal saw summer proposal for Serie A striker turned down

Arsenal and their Premier League and city rivals Tottenham Hotspur both reportedly failed with summer offers for Inter Milan and Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez.

With the Serie A giants in financial turmoil for much of the recent transfer market, Martinez was strongly linked with a transfer to one of the North London sides for the 2021-22 season.

However, the Nerazzurri instead garnered £97.5 million through the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea, allowing the club to retain the services of the player for the time being.

According to a recent report from an Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Spurs and the La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid both saw £76.9m bids for Martinez rebuffed by Simone Inzaghi’s side, while a lower offer tabled by the Gunners was also swiftly rejected.

The 24-year-old star is yet to agree to an extension on his current Nerazzurri contract – which expires in June 2023 – but the South American is expected to commit his long0-term future to the club before the end of the campaign.

The former Racing youngster already boasts two goals from two Serie A matches this season after registering 17 goals and 10 assists in the club’s title-winning campaign last term.
