Barcelona 27-year-old defender turned down January transfer to Liverpool

Liverpool reportedly expressed an interest in securing the services of Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti during the January transfer window.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all ruled out for the rest of the season, manager Jurgen Klopp moved to bring in two new defender in order to have answer on his defensive issues.

However, while Preston North End’s Ben Davies and Schalke 04’s Ozan Kabak ultimately made a switch to Anfield, it appears that the Mersyeside Reds had also been keen on a World Cup winner.

According to The Athletic, the Premier League defending champions made contact with La Liga giants, Barcelona regarding the availability of Samuel Umtiti, who has been hit by injuries over the past two seasons.

The Catalan heavyweights find themselves in a position where they need to consider offers for any of their players following to their worsening financial situation.

Nevertheless, Samuel Umtiti is believed to have turned down the opportunity to make a move to Anfield having recently been provided with game time by Dutch head-coach, Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona defender himself is keen on to leave the club and it seems that he is likely to depart from Camp Nou in the summer and Liverpool could try and made move for his signature when the transfer window will be re-opened.
