Barcelona will reportedly get their chance to at least attempt to snap up Cesar Azpilicueta this summer’s transfer market.
Xavi’s side continue to be linked with the experienced player, who is now in the back-end of his professional career.
He is 32 years of age, but the Spaniard is still performing at a top level, and Cesar is an attractive option, considering his ability to play as a right-back as well as part of a back three.
Blaugrana’s boss is said to be interested in his compatriot, and the La Liga giants are likely to push for a move in the summer, according to Sport.
Crucially, the Catalans will at least have the opportunity to make a swoop for Azpilicueta, as things stand.
Previously, the side were unsure that he’d become a free agent, with the Blues having an option to renew the defender’s contract by 12 months.
But as things stand, they haven’t triggered the clause, and the UK Government sanctions mean Chelsea are unable to agree on any fresh deals.
The recent sanctions are currently set until the end of May, but they could continue unless the sale of Chelsea progresses in the meantime.
As things stand, the Spanish side can land him on a free transfer, and Barcelona can even agree on a deal now if he is willing to listen.
