German giants Schalke 04 have reportedly turned their attention to Chelsea midfield star Danny Drinkwater after cooling interest in Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The Bundesliga club were believed to have been interested in securing the services of Loftus-Cheek on a season-long loan for the 2018-19 season, only for the 22-year-old Englishman to turn down a move in order to fight for starting role under Maurizio Sarri.
The Daily Star reports that Bundesliga giants Schalke have now identified Danny Drinkwater as a possible alternative to replace German midfielder Max Meyer, who left the club earlier this summer.
The Blues new head-coach Maurizio Sarri is willing to sanction the exit of former Leicester City star Drinkwater, who made just five Premier League starts for the club last term following his arrival from the Foxes.
The 28-year-old was not involved in the matchday squad for the Blues 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town on the opening weekend of the new campaign and appears to be behind N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Matteo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the midfield pecking order at Chelsea.
Danny Drinkwater could still choose to fight for his place in the team, however, the Blues are open to sending the England international out on a season-long loan deal to a foreign team before the end of the European transfer window shuts on August 31.
