Chelsea declare interest in 23-year-old La Liga centre-back

Chelsea and Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, with conversations set to take place this week.

It was stated earlier this month that the Uruguay international was keen to remain at Blaugrana as the player has been one of the standout performers since club legend Xavi’s arrival in the dugout and the centre-half is on board with the head coach’s project at Camp Nou.

However, that hasn’t stopped the interest and speculation in the 23-year-old star’s availability, with Juventus and Manchester United among the clubs watching his situation.

The Express now says that the Blues and the Gunners are also showing interest in the South American, who is yet to agree to fresh terms with the Spanish outfit, with his current deal set to expire next year.

The Catalans are said to not want to lose out on a transfer sum for Araujo if he stays put but then fails to sign an extension, meaning that he could depart for nothing in 2023, which may force Barcelona into a sale in the summer.

Ronald arrived at Barcelona in 2018 before making his senior team debut the following year and has gone on to make 72 appearances for the club.
