Chelsea have entered the race to land Portuguese wonderkid Nuno Mendes from Sporting Lisbon, with the teenage defender also on the radars of Manchester United and Manchester City, according to a recent report from Portuguese publication Record.

Having come through the ranks at the Portuguese club, Mendes burst onto the scenes in 2020, making his first-team debut in the post-lockdown period and has never looked back since.

He has grown into a regular in the side under manager Ruben Amorim and played an important role in the Lions’ Liga NOS title triumph in the 2020/21 term.

The 18-year-old ended the season with a return of one goal and two assists from 35 appearances in all competitions. Nuno’s development over the course of the past year has resulted in serious interest from across Europe.

And now, the Blues have also entered the fray for the landing of the 18-year-old wonderkid. The west Londoners splashed the cash on a new left-back last year, signing Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.

The Englishman has enjoyed an impressive debut season at the club meaning Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri have found playing time hard to come by and are staring at uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

And in case either of them is sold by the club in the summer, Nuno could be seen as a viable target for them to add more depth and quality to the left-back department.
