Chelsea midfielder ready to fight for starting role at Maurizio Sarri’s team

Chelsea versatile midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has reportedly decided to snub a loan move to Bundesliga giants Schalke 04 to fight for his place at Maurizio Sarri’s starting XI.

Loftus-Cheek impressed during last season loan spell at Crystal Palace, with his performances for the Eagles helped him to earn place in England’s World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old further enhanced his reputation by helping the Three Lions to reach the semi-finals in Russia. However, he faces stiff competition for starting role at Chelsea with  Cesc Fabregas, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater also available to the Blues new boss Maurizio Sarri.

Lotus-Cheek is still able to join a foreign team on loan despite the English transfer window shuts down last week, and Bundesliga outfit Schalke are believed to be the first to have registered an interest, having lost Max Meyer this summer.

However, The Guardian reports that the Englishman is determined to work his way into Sarri’s first-team plans this campaign and will turn down the chance to move abroad as a result.

Barkley was selected as the third central midfielder alongside with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho for Chelsea’s season-opening victory over Huddersfield Town, although Loftus-Cheek did make a 22-minute cameo from the bench.
