Chelsea have reportedly identified Brighton & Hove Albion defender Adam Webster as a cheaper alternative to Leicester City’s star Wesley Fofana who is believed to be valued at £70m by the Foxes.
The West London giants looking to recruit a new centre-back before the transfer window ends on September 1, with Frenchman believed to be their primary target.
The Blues are allegedly contemplating whether to make a world-record bid of over £70m for the 21-year-old who is also keen on swapping King Power Stadium for Stamford Bridge.
Fofana was left out of the Foxes team for last weekend’s 2-1 home loss in the Premier League against Southampton, with Rodgers citing that the 21-year-old star was ‘not in the right frame of mind to play’.
Chelsea are understood to have drawn up a list of alternatives should they fail to sign Frenchman before the end of the summer transfer windows, with Man Utd skipper Harry Maguire also appeared on the radar.
According to the Daily Mail, Brighton centre-back Webster is another name who has been on the shortlist of Thomas Tuchel.
A report back in January reported that the Blues identified the 27-year-old as a potential target ahead of the 2022-23 season, and they still hold their interest in the Englishman.
Webster has become a key player under Brighton manager Graham Potter since joining the club from Bristol City for around £20m in the summer of 2019.
The 6ft 3in centre-back played 91 games for the Seagulls across all competitions, founding back of the net seven times including a header against the Blues in a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium last term.
