Chelsea are allegedly set to battle it out with the La Liga giants Real Madrid for the signature of Matthijs de Ligt in 2022.
According to Italian source Calciomercato, Los Blancos are interested in landing the Netherlands international from Juventus after Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos both leaving the Santiago Bernabeu outfit over the recently-concluded summer transfer market.
Matthijs, who will have two years remaining on his deal with the Old Lady by the time next year comes along, has also been mentioned with a move to the Blues in the latest days, with Thomas Tuchel clearly interested in bolstering his defensive options.
Chelsea were keen on signing Jules Kounde over the summer, but couldn’t agree on a price with Sevilla for the France international – meaning their attention could turn somewhere else at the end of the 2021/22 season.
The 22-year-old de Ligt could be an option for the west London heavyweights and has been compared to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk in the past.
The Netherlands defender has often been touted as one of the strongest centre-halves in world football and if the Blues were to sign someone even close to Virgil’s level, then it’d be a welcome addition for Tuchel.
