Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to the BILD reports.
The Greek defender has 12 months left on his current deal with the German giants and expected to leave the club this summer as Dortmund planning to avoid the risk of losing him for free next year.
The Gunners are believed to be facing competition from Juventus, Chelsea and Manchester United for Sokratis’ signature, but, the club’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is currently giving them the edge.
The report states that Greek international defender’s ’ ‘probable’ destination this summer is Emirates Stadium with the 29-year-old expected to leave Westfalenstadion in the coming months.
Mislintat, who joined the Gunners from Dortmund last November, is the man pushing for the transfer to get done, having also signed the player for from Werder back in 2013.
He is also in close contact with the agent of Konstantinos Farras meaning Arsene Wenger’s side are leading the chasing pack for his signature.
Any deal for Sokratis is believed to be in the region of €20m.
Meanwhile, Mislintat has made signing centre-back, central midfielder and goalkeeper his primary targets this summer as he looks to strengthen the Gunners squad for the next season.
