Liverpool are reportedly on the verge to agreeing a fee with Bayern Munich for the transfer of Thiago Alcantara.
The defending Premier League champions have now begun talks with the German giants after being strongly linked with securing the services of Spanish playmaker throughout the summer.
It is believed the Reds would pay an initial fee of £20million for the former Barcelona star, who has one year left on his current deal at Bayern, with more to follow in add-ons.
Liverpool head-coach Jurgen Klopp had previously tried to rubbish rumours about Spaniard.
“It is nice that we are linked with him but that is pretty much all, really,” the German said last week.
That came amid reports a potential move for the Spaniard was being held up by uncertainty over the future of the Merseyside Reds playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman, who is in the final year of his deal at Anfield, has been rumoured with a switch to Barcelona.
Liverpool, however, have decided to make their move for Thiago now despite whether Wijandldum remains or departs from the club.
Bayern manager Hansi Flick said at his press conference on Thursday: “Thiago is an exceptional player who spent seven hugely successful years here.
“He’s a wonderful person and an outstanding professional. It was very emotional today when he said goodbye to us all.”
