Italian defender could end loan spell and make return to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his side are looking into the viability of recalling defender Emerson Palmieri from his loan stint at Lyon after the England international Ben Chilwell was ruled out for the remainder of the term.

The Italian joined Les Gones on a season-long loan last year and he has made 12 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit this term, scoring once.

The German allowed Emerson to quit the club due to the competition between Marcos Alonso and Chilwell for the left-back spot.

But Ben has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after the Blues decided the player did require surgery for an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

‘I don’t want to lie. We are looking into the situation because we have now a new situation with Ben Chilwell,’ said Thomas.

‘One of the possibilities is a player we know and we love as a person, Emerson. But we need to check the details. We are discussing and reflecting and this will go on for the next days, maybe weeks.’

The Spaniard deputised as Chelsea hosted Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. They had hoped to have the former Leicester City star back in the New Year by treating his injury in a conventional way but his focus is now on next term.
