Manchester United are set to accelerate a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Ruben Neves and will challenge Manchester City for the star in January if Pep Guardiola’s team submit an offer.
Jose Mourinho is a long-term admirer of the youngster and the pair share an agent in Jorge Mendes, who consults with the Red Devils boss on a regular basis.
The superagent orchestrated Neves’ move to Wolves while they were in the Championship and the Portuguese manager had been keen to see how the 21-year-old fares during his debut season in the Premier League.
However, the Citizens’ failure to sign Jorginho last summer has forced Pep Guardiola into re-evaluating his options, and his side are ready to move for Ruben Neves in January.
That would be sooner than United would ideally like to make their move for Neves but, in a measure of Mourinho’s admiration for the midfielder, can reveal the Red Devils will counter any offer made by City in the January transfer window.
The Portugal international is just one year into his five-year deal at Molineux and Wolves’ Chinese owners are under no pressure to offload their star following his £15.8 million move from Porto.
