The German manager’s Merseyside club is reportedly interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate before the winter transfer window slams shut. U21 France international joined Bundesliga club in 2017 after making the switch from FC Sochaux.
Since joining Julian Nagelsmann’s men, Ibrahima has featured in 86 games in all tournaments and has grown to become one of his coach’s most trusted defenders. Like team-mate Dayot Upamecano, Konate is creating quite a stir throughout Europe as he emerges as one of the most solid defenders in the Bundesliga.
Reds are interested in both defenders. However, with Dayot unlikely to be available until the summer, Klopp could turn his attentions to the 21-year-old defender. It has been reported that Liverpool may be able to prize the talented young centre-back away from the Red Bull Arena before the winter window shuts.
RB Leipzig are believed to have inserted a minimum release clause of £45m into the French defender’s contract, a fee Reds may be tempted to activate in an attempt to alleviate their injury worries. However, highly-rated Liverpool outlet have reported that the Reds are ‘more likely’ to go all out for Ibrahima’s team-mate Upamecano.
It does seem logical for Reds to add some kind of defensive cover in winter, but it’s also a notoriously hard time of year to find any value in the market.
It’s also worth noting that any new signing would need to acknowledge that they’ll be unlikely to start once everyone is fit again, but it’s also hard to see any real quality being available on a short term contract.
That hasn’t stopped multiple defenders being linked with a move to Liverpool in the winter window, but it looks like Ajax defender Perr Schuurs won’t be going anywhere just now.
