The Merseyside giants have come late to the gossip-peddlar’s party this year but, having snared Thiago Alcântara for £27m on Thursday, the German boss has rediscovered his love of retail therapy, and is thinking of boosting his not inconsiderable attacking resources with Watford forward Ismaïla Sarr.
Senegal international won’t come cheap though, with the newly relegated Championship club slapping a £36m price tag on the attacker. The Merseyside giants may also face contest for Ismaila from their old pals Man United too. Reds are ready to confirm the arrival of Diogo Jota from Wolves today.
Liverpool have agreed to pay £41m for the Portuguese winger, with the deal potentially rising to £45m. However, they’ll pay only £4m upfront, with the rest of the money coming from a payment structure set up with their PL rivals. The Senegalese winger was expected to leave the Hornets this summer after impressing in Watford’s fateful season last year.
Signing a new forward was at the top of the German manager’s priorities for the transfer window this summer, and the 22-year-old winger was believed to be at the top of the list after the Hornets’ relegation. However, despite now playing Championship football, Watford are unwilling to let go of their forward.
As a result, they slapped a £40m price tag on Ismaila’s head and wanted the deal to be worth upwards of £50m in add-ons. That would have made the Senegalese winger Reds third-most expensive signing of all-time behind only Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk. As a result of Hornets’ demands, Liverpool opted to look elsewhere and eventually landed on diogo Jota.
