Liverpool have reportedly handed a huge blow in their pursuit of Gini Wijnaldum to a new deal as the Dutch midfielder has rejected their offer of an extension.
According to Corriere dello Sport, as transcribed by Tribal Football, 30-year-old midfielder has rejected Liverpool’s latest contract offer and looks like to leave the club on a free transfer next summer with Barcelona seems to be his favoured destination.
The report suggests that Dutchman is keen on to make a move to Spanish giants to link up with his former national team head-coach Ronald Koeman, with Inter Milan also lurking as a potential suitor.
Losing 30-year-old midfielder could be a massive blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side because of how important he has been to Jurgen Klopp’s success at the club. No midfielder has played more minutes for the Mersyeside Reds across the last three campaigns than Wijnaldum, showing how much Klopp trusts him to do a job in the midfield area.
There is still just over a month to go until the winter transfer window, when he can sign a pre-contract with another foreign club, so the Mersyeside Reds do have time to convince him to stay.
Klopp and Michael Edwards have around four weeks to persuade Dutch midfielder to sign an extension and it will be interesting to see how this one plays out between now and the end of the winter transfer window.
