Liverpool have declared interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane in their hunt to make a marquee defensive summer signing, a recent report has claimed.
The Anfield side have suffered a nightmare with injuries in the defence this season, with all three senior centre-halves out.
As such, January signing Ozan Kabak has proved crucial, while fellow recruit Ben Davies has yet to play. However, there is allegedly a belief among Liverpool senior figures over the need for another big summer acquisition.
According to AS, Los Blancos’ Varane has recently appeared their radar. The French star made his 350th Los Blancos appearance last week.
That came as Raphael’s 31st outing of the season, with the 27-year-old defender only missing one La Liga match so far this season.
Indeed, AS points out that he is in one of the best moments in his professional career after pondering an exit from the Spanish capital two years ago.
Since then, Liverpool’s league rivals Manchester United have been mentioned with a swoop among other teams.
However, uncertainty has returned with the star’s contract running out next summer. The Galacticos have opened discussions over an extension, but they have thus far proved fruitless.
As such, should his current situation remain the same in the summer, Los Blancos will listen to proposals for him.
After returning to his best form following his Real Madrid exit considerations, the club slapped a €500m asking price on Varane.
But Varane’s situation has drastically changed with his deal running down and the board want to make a good sale if he is to leave.
Therefore, they’d be willing to entertain offers of around €70 million (£60.7 million) for his services.
