Liverpool have reportedly identified RB Leipzig’s centre-back Dayot Upamecano as their top transfer target in January.
The Merseyside Reds are widely expected to move for a new centre-back during the January transfer window, having lost both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season following the knee problems.
A number of players have been rumoured with the Premier League defending champions in recent weeks, including Schalke 04’s centre-back Ozan Kabak and Real Madrid’s Eder Militao.
However, according to The Athletic, Liverpool have made Frenchman their leading target, with German outfits seemingly facing an uphill task to keep him at the club.
The report suggests that Jurgen Klopp’s side had initially wanted to wait for the end of the 2020/21 season to move for the Frenchman as a €45m (£39.9m) release clause will come into play in the summer.
However, the club’s injury crisis, which has also recently seen them lose Fabinho, could force their hand at the start of 2021.
Manchester United and Manchester City are also both believed to be interested in securing the services of Upamecano, who has played 10 games for RB Leipzig during the 2020-21 season, while Arsenal are also one of the contenders to sign the Frenchman.
