Chelsea are pushing to sign the long-term Liverpool target Ousmane Dembele, according to a fresh report.
The 24-year-old Barcelona winger is in the final six months of his deal, leading to speculation that an Anfield move may be on the cards. Xavi tried to end such transfer links when he said an extension was in the works.
“I feel positive with him again. Ousmane says that he wants to continue, that he is happy here. It is a matter of agreeing with his representative. He knows about the importance he will have if he stays.” the boss told reporters.
But talks soon hit a major stumbling block. Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenburg states the Frenchman wants €43 million (£36 million) per year to sign on once again, which equates to an astonishing £700,000 per week.
Blaugrana are unlikely to sanction this because of two factors. Firstly, Ousmane has had an underwhelming time in La Liga since his £135.5 million switch from Borussia Dortmund and secondly, they are in over €1bn of debt.
Thomas Tuchel’s side could now pounce on the current situation. Sport Witness, who quote a French outlet L’Equipe, state the west London heavyweights are ‘pushing’ to land the Reds-linked player.
The club are in the mix to snap him up on a free transfer once Dembele’s terms expire on July 1. Chelsea are apparently watching the contract stalemate closely.
