Liverpool reportedly enquired about the possibility of securing the services of in-demand RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol during the winter transfer window.

A host of Europe’s top teams, including Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea,  are also believed to be in the race for the youngster, who burst onto the global scene with his form at the World Cup, where Croatia finished third.

Gvardiol scored in the third-place playoff victory over Morocco and was a standout figure for the Vatreni throughout, earning plaudits as one of the best-performing defenders s at the tournament.

The 21-year-old centre-back has shown similar form at his team RB Leipzig too, netting the equaliser in their draw with the Citizens in the Champions League two weeks ago.

The Merseyside Reds are expected to be in the hunt for a defender in the summer following to the indifferent form shown by both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip this term.
