Liverpool set to make approach for Barcelona 6 ft 4 defender

Liverpool are reportedly one of a host of Premier League clubs understood to be interested in landing Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.

The Reds are not one of the teams who have been linked the most, with Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea getting the headline this time, but Sport reports the Anfield outfit as being serious about bringing in the central defender.

With a deal lasting until June 2023, the Reds-linked Uruguay international has been in renewal discussions with his current club.

They do not want him to get to the situation where the player has a year left on his current contract, because at that point a summer sale will have to be seriously thought about.

Blaugrana have seen with winger Ousmane Dembele what can happen when a star drags out renewal discussions, and they will not want to be in the same situation again.

The South American has been a regular since then-manager Ronald Koeman brought him into the first-team, and that status has continued under new head coach Xavi.

A renewal proposal has been made, but it is far below what many of Ronald’s teammates earn, and the level of wages new recruits have been brought in at.

The 22-year-old wants recognition that he is a regular senior team player. The same report adds that the centre-back has been approached by Jurgen Klopp’s side, as well as others, giving the Catalans some reason for worry.
