The Merseyside giants are reportedly eyeing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino as a possible Plan B in case their effort to add Jude Bellingham falls through. The Reds look to be keeping their options open, with Spain international now emerging as an alternative should a move for the Englishman not pan out.
Merino came through the ranks at Osasuna before making the switch to Borussia Dortmund at a very young age, where the midfielder rose to prominence as a talented teenager. A move to Newcastle United followed in 2017, but a year later, Mikel returned to La Liga, signing for Real Sociedad, where the midfielder has achieved great progress.
Widely regarded as one of the best central midfielders on display in La Liga currently, the Spanish footballer has made his breakthrough into the national team and has also attracted interest from the likes of Barcelona in the past.
The report adds that the Reds see the 25-year-old player as the ideal option for the profile of the midfielder that the German tactician is looking for.
Apart from Jude Bellingham and Mikel Merino, the Reds also have their eyes on Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, who, unlike the two, would be available on a free transfer next year, having entered the final twelve months of his deal with the Rossoneri. It will undoubtedly be interesting to see who Liverpool go after to fill the gap left by Gini Wijnaldum’s exit.
