Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Atletico Madrid.

According to sources close to the Argentine coach, Diego Simeone wants to build his new Atletico Madrid midfield around the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder and will move for the 28-year-old at the end of this season.

Herrera played a leading role as the Red Devils won the EFL Cup and Europa League last season, but the Spain international has just seven starts in the Premier League and Champions League so far this season.

But Nemanja Matic’s signing from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, saw Herrera begin the season as on the bench

The 28-year-old midfielder has less than a year remaining on his contract at United, and according to AS, Rojiblancos are ready to launch a bid for the midfielder, who has previously represented Real Zaragoza and Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico will be permitted to speak to Herrera from in the new year, but United hold the option of extending the player’s deal by an extra 12 months.

Ander Herrera joined Manchester United in summer of 2014 from Athletic Bilbao for a reported £29m transfer fee. He has played in 137 matches so far and scored 15 goals for the club.
