Manchester United are allegedly set to pay the £97million release clause to seal the transfer of Inter Milan ace Mauro Icardi amid interests coming from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
The Argentina international has had a magnificent season in Serie A, managing to score 18 goals in just 22 matches to establish himself as one of the most clinical forwards in Europe.
That hasn’t escaped the attention of Man United, with Corriere dello Sport linking them as his admirers while an additional report from the Sun claims that they’re ready to meet his £97m buy-out fee to bring him at Old Trafford.
United don’t look in desperate need of a new forward but could do with an upgrade on Romelu Lukaku, who has mostly failed to live up to expectations following his summer move from Everton.
The Belgian international was in exceptional form against Chelsea this weekend to help himself score a goal and provide an assist in a decisive 2-1 victory, but doubts will endure about his long-term suitability.
Icardi may be more to Jose Mourinho’s liking, and it would be a considerable addition to get him ahead of major European giants such as Real and PSG.
