Manchester United are keen on signing Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero with the Argentine on their three-man wishlist this summer.
The 23-year-old star has enjoyed an impressive 2020-21 campaign on loan at Atalanta from Juventus, with La Dea expected to take up their option to sign the player permanently for €25m at the end of the season.
Atalanta could consider a quick sale however for a sum in the region of €40 million, with Sky Sports reporting there is firm interest from the Red Devils.
Sven Botman of Lille and Sevilla defender Jules Kounde are the two other names on the club’s list of potential signings at the back.
With Edinson Cavani committing to another year at Old Trafford, United are likely to focus on bolstering other areas of their side with a long-term partner for club captain Harry Maguire thought to be a priority.
Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes bringing in a senior team option at the back will enable United to make the step up next season.
‘I think Manchester United’s prime position for them to strengthen, to really improve and become a team who can compete is centre-back,’ he told BT Sport after the 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Tuesday.
‘To get a partner for Harry Maguire who you go, actually every week he produces, he’s there.
‘At the moment there’s too many players centre-forwards especially who probably are looking when they get in the tunnel and are thinking, “I’ve got a chance here. I think I can smell a chance.’
