Manchester United could reportedly revive their long-term interest in Nikola Milenkovic with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen on signing a new central defender ahead of next season.
The Serbian star was closely watched by the Red Devils under former chief Jose Mourinho but Fiorentina’s £54 million asking price put them off from making an official approach.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Ole has expressed the desire to bring in another centre-back during the summer and Nikola is one of the high-profile targets for the club.
The 22-year-old star, who has also been tracked by the likes of Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Napoli, could be available for a reduced fee of around £40 million with his contract scheduled to expire in two years’ time.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been the constant choices under Ole at the heart of the defence but the Norwegian seems keen on adding competition for places.
Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly have impressed with the limited opportunities in the current season but the duo have had injury problems over the past few campaigns.
Meantime, Solskjaer is reportedly content with his options at left-back, leaving the head caoch to focus on other targets during the next transfer market.
With the club having work to do in order to become PL title challengers, it has previously been stated that a replacement for Luke Shaw would be purchased at the earliest opportunity.
However, according to The Sun, Ole is prepared to promote academy product Brandon Williams to the first choice in that position.
During his first senior season at Old Trafford, the 19-year-old has made 19 starts and seven substitute outings across all competitions.
