Man Utd in danger to miss out signing of 6 ft 3 English stopper

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly beaten Manchester United in the hunt to sign West Bromwich Albion shot-stopper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer.

The Englishman is out of contract at The Hawthorns in the summer, and after it was confirmed that he’ll leave the West Midlands outfit, numerous top flight outfits have been linked with the player’s signature.

Both the Red Devils and Spurs were linked with a genuine interest in the 29-year-old star, but according to a report from the Mirror, it is the latter that have won the hunt.

The report outlines that Ralf Rangnick’s side have decided not to complete a move for Johnstone because of the competition already being provided for the Spain international David de Gea’s number one spot by the Englishman Dean Henderson.

With Antonio Conte and co. recently deciding against a permanent swoop for on-loan player Pierluigi Gollini, it has opened up the possibility of the ex-United and Aston Villa man competing with first-choice Hugo Lloris to be the No1 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium for the 2022-23 season.

Following their relegation to the Championship last term, Johnstone remained at the club despite interest last year, but after being not able to help his team return to the Premier League, it was recently announced that he would be parting ways with them following the expiration of his deal in June.
