Man Utd set to make approach for 23-year-old Spanish midfielder

Manchester United are prepared to make a swoop for RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo next summer, but only if the player’s preferred switch to former club Barcelona falls through.

The Spaniard has taken a unique path in his professional career so far, leaving the youth system at Blaugrana when he was 16 for the Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb, before switching to Die Roten Bullen in January 2020.

Barcelona want to bring Dani back to his homeland, Olmo wants to make the return and the Germans are open to selling in 2022 after convincing him to stay on for one more campaign earlier this year.

It appeared that the transfer was near enough agreed, but Spanish outlet El Nacional report that the Catalans’ interest in Manchester City outcast Raheem Sterling is serious and could throw a spanner in the works.

Barcelona manager Xavi is desperate to add an attacking variant to his squad in January and that could be a loan move for Sterling in January or a permanent summer move.

Dani has made it clear that a move to La Liga is his preferred option, but if they instead opt for Raheem, or he even perceives that he is no longer wanted at Barcelona, then Olmo could take up the Manchester United option.

The 20-time English champions are aware that the ace wants Spain switch, but will be ready to step in if it does not come to fruition.
