Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane had reportedly emerged as a £100m target for Man Utd during this summer’s transfer window.
The Red Devils will head into the new Premier League season having failed to sign in a new centre-back, despite being frequently rumoured with the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng.
The hierarchy at Man Utd were allegedly against paying what they considered to be over the odds for any additions, however, according to The Sun reports the Red Devils were prepared to spend big on Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.
The Reds would have allegedly deemed an offer of £100m as good value for money, with the Frenchman only being 25 years of age and having the potential to play a key role in the centre of the defence for over 10 years.
However, a move did not materialise and Jose Mourinho must now work with the same central defensive setup as he did last term.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly’s duo have started the Premier League season opener against Leicester City.
