Manchester United are planning a shock summer move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti as they plan an upgrade to their backline after the end of the current campaign, according to the British sources.
The Red Devils head-coach Jose Mourinho weighs up whether a move for Umtiti or Varane would be the best option.
Jose Mourinho wants a star name to partner Eric Bailly at the heart of the Red Devils backline and French duo seems to be an ideal target.
The report suggests that a move for Barcelona star would be the easier deal to pull off. The 24-year-old star would apparently be more tempted by the prospect of making the switch to Old Trafford rather his compatriot who is also aged 24.
Umtiti is currently contracted with Barcelona. However, the Camp Nou hierarchy are not prepared to match his £150,000-a-week wage demands and Frenchman could consider a possibility of transfer this summer.
His current deal runs until June 2021, so Ernesto Valverde’s side are under no pressure to sell.
Varane has been a key player for Real Madrid’s defensive end and the Los Blancos are unlikely to let him leave the club.
