Serbian holding midfielder Nemanja Matic has completed his move to Manchester United from Chelsea and has already been handed his shirt number for the season ahead.
The 28-year-old star, who joins the Old Trafford club from the Stamford Bridge side in a £40m transfer deal, will wear the No.31 jersey.
There had been a strong hint that he would wear that particular number after a photo that was leaked from his medical last Sunday showed the figure on the front of a training kit he was wearing.
It’s possible the Serbia international could wear it as soon as Wednesday when the Red Devils take on Serie A side Sampdoria in a friendly in Dublin.
Following the announcement of his arrival Man United head coach Jose Mourinho said: ‘I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new number 31.’
The previous incumbent of the jersey was German veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger who wore it prior to his departure for the MLS in January.
