Not Upamecano: Chelsea eyeing move for RB Leipzig highly-rated defender

By | January 13, 2021

Reports have emerged that RB Leipzig defender Matthew Bondswell is a possible transfer target for Chelsea in the future.

The left-back role had been a problematic one for the Blues in recent years but the summer acquisition of Ben Chilwell has turned out to be a masterstroke, with the Englishman settling in nicely.

Frank Lampard wants to further strengthen the position as neither Emerson Palmieri nor Marcos Alonso have impressed and both have been linked with a transfer away from West London.

Defensive solidity has become a hallmark of the club and new recruits have settled in nicely, but the west Londoners are still considering some perceived zones of weakness.

Reports by the British daily newspaper The Telegraph suggest that the Blues are monitoring RB Leipzig’s left-back Bondswell and although Matthew is yet to make an appearance for the Bundesliga side, he is currently starring in the Netherlands Eerste Divisie.

The England U18 international currently plays for FC Dordrecht on loan in the country’s second division and has made seven appearances across all competitions for Ben Kinds’ side.

The 18-year-old ace has less than seven months to go on his current contract with Leipzig and if he doesn’t sign an extension, Bondswell is free to start discussing with the Blues in January ahead of a free transfer next year.

Matthew Bondswell might relish a return to his homeland, having initially spent eight years of his developmental career with Nottingham Forest.
